Meaning & Significance

"Chalisa" means a hymn of forty verses, and the Shiv Chalisa is among the most widely recited Shiva prayers in North Indian homes and temples. The poet signs his name, Ayodhyadas, in both the opening doha and the final chaupai; beyond that, little is reliably known about him. The hymn first describes Shiva's form — the Ganga, the crescent moon, the serpents, the trident, Parvati and his family — and then sings of his deeds: the defeat of Tarakasura, Jalandhara and Tripura, his drinking of the poison from the churning of the ocean, and the grace he showed to Rama and to Vishnu. In its final part the devotee calls on Shiva for help in distress, and the text describes the traditional practice of recitation, the Trayodashi fast and worship. Its simple language makes it accessible to everyone, from children to elders.

The hymn opens and closes with dohas, and its body is in the chaupai metre of sixteen beats (matras) per quarter-line.

Benefits

  • Devotees believe sincere recitation brings comfort and calm in times of trouble and fear.
  • Traditionally considered especially auspicious on Mondays, Pradosha/Trayodashi, in Shravan and on Maha Shivaratri.
  • Its closing verses traditionally associate regular recitation with relief from the burden of debt and from hardship — a matter of faith, not a guarantee.
  • Written in simple Hindi, it is easy for the whole family, children included, to recite together.

How to Chant

After a morning bath, sit before a Shiva Linga or image of Shiva with incense and a lamp, offer water or bilva leaves, and recite the whole text from the opening doha to the closing doha. The Chalisa itself speaks of a regular morning recitation; many devotees read it on Mondays or daily through Shravan, once, three times or eleven times.
