Meaning & Significance

The Shani Chalisa is a popular devotional hymn in Hindi; its last chaupai names Ramsundar, the Lord's servant, and its closing doha names "Vimal". It opens with a doha honouring Ganesha, then describes the Sun's son Shani Dev, dark and four-armed, and lists his ten names. It goes on to tell how his influence touched Rama, King Vikramaditya, Harishchandra, Nala, the Pandavas and even Shiva and Parvati, conveying that neither gods nor kings stand outside the working of karma and time, and that humility softens hardship. It then lists Shani's mounts and "feet" (charanas) as described in astrological tradition, and closes with devotional observances such as regular recitation, offering water to the peepal tree and giving lamps. It is recited above all on Saturday evenings, on Shani Jayanti and during Sade Sati and Dhaiya.

Two opening dohas, forty chaupais (sixteen matras per quarter) and a closing doha, in Awadhi and Braj-tinged Hindi.

Benefits

  • Devotees believe that reciting it with faith on Saturdays draws Shani Dev's grace and helps them stay patient through difficult times.
  • It is traditionally recited as a devotional observance during Sade Sati, Dhaiya or a Shani period.
  • The hymn itself suggests a forty-day vow of daily recitation, which devotees take up as a practice of discipline and faith.
  • Because Shani is regarded as the dispenser of the fruits of karma, many devotees recite it as a reminder to act with humility and integrity.

How to Chant

On Saturday evening, after bathing, light a mustard-oil lamp before an image of Shani Dev or beneath a peepal tree and recite with a calm mind. By custom, black sesame, urad dal or mustard oil is also given in charity. Many devotees recite the Hanuman Chalisa alongside it, and many take a vow to recite it for forty consecutive days.
