Meaning & Significance

The Ganesh Chalisa is a popular devotional hymn in Awadhi and Braj-tinged Hindi; one of its chaupais names the poet as Ramsundar, the Lord's servant. After describing Ganesha's charming form, it tells his birth story at length - Parvati's austerity, Ganesha arriving as a Brahmin guest, the child's head being severed by Shani's glance, and Vishnu bringing an elephant's head which Shiva restores to life. This version follows the tradition found in the Ganapati Khanda of the Brahma Vaivarta Purana. The episode of circling his parents then explains why Ganesha is worshipped first and honoured as the lord of wisdom. It is recited especially on Wednesdays, on Sankashti and Vinayaka Chaturthi, during Ganesh Chaturthi and at the start of new undertakings.

An opening doha, thirty-eight chaupais (sixteen matras per quarter) and two closing dohas, in Awadhi and Braj-tinged Hindi.

Benefits

  • It is traditionally recited before a new venture, an exam, a journey or a housewarming as a prayer for the removal of obstacles.
  • Devotees believe regular recitation invites Ganesha's blessing for wisdom, discernment and focus.
  • Reciting it on Wednesdays and on Chaturthi is considered especially auspicious.
  • The closing doha says auspiciousness dwells in the home of one who recites it with attention, which devotees hold as a matter of faith.

How to Chant

After bathing, light a lamp before an image of Ganesha, offer durva grass, red flowers and modaks or laddoos, and recite with a focused mind. Singing the aarti "Jai Ganesh Jai Ganesh Deva" afterwards is customary. On Chaturthi or during Ganeshotsav many devotees recite it once, three times or eleven times a day.
