Meaning & Significance

The Hanuman Chalisa is traditionally attributed to Goswami Tulsidas, the 16th-century poet-saint who also wrote the Ramcharitmanas. Its name comes from "chalis" (forty), after its forty chaupai verses. In the opening dohas the poet purifies his mind through reverence for the Guru and, calling himself lacking in wisdom, asks the Son of the Wind for strength, intellect, and knowledge. The chaupais then describe Hanuman's form, his childhood exploits, the search for Sita, the burning of Lanka, the bringing of the Sanjivani herb, and above all his selfless service to Rama, while the final verses describe the merit of reciting the hymn. It is among the most widely recited prayers in North India — especially on Tuesdays and Saturdays, on Hanuman Jayanti, and at times of fear or difficulty.

Composed in Awadhi, in the doha and chaupai metres.

Benefits

  • Traditionally recited for courage, inner strength, and protection from fear.
  • Devotees recite it seeking the removal of obstacles and difficulties.
  • Many believe regular recitation steadies and focuses the mind and keeps negative thoughts at bay.
  • Because its opening doha asks for strength, intellect, and learning, students often recite it too.
  • Considered especially auspicious on Tuesdays, Saturdays, and Hanuman Jayanti.

How to Chant

After bathing, light a lamp before an image or idol of Hanuman in a clean place and recite with devotion — first the two opening dohas, then the forty chaupais, and finally the closing doha. Many devotees recite it once daily, and 7, 11, or 108 times on special occasions.
