  1. ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः। तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि। धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात्॥

Om bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ | Tat savitur vareṇyaṃ bhargo devasya dhīmahi | Dhiyo yo naḥ prachodayāt ||

Meaning

Connected meaning: We contemplate that worthy divine radiance of Savitr; may it inspire our understanding.

Tat — that; savituh — of Savitr, the impelling deity; varenyam — worthy of choosing, excellent; bhargah — divine radiance; devasya — of the deity; dhimahi — we contemplate.

Dhiyah — understandings or powers of thought; yah — who; nah — our; prachodayat — may inspire or impel. In the continuous text, bhargah devasya becomes bhargo devasya, and dhiyah yah becomes dhiyo yo through sandhi.

Om and the vyahrtis bhuh, bhuvah and svah precede the verse in customary worship recitation. The three are understood as earth, the intermediate realm and heaven. Rigveda 3.62.10 itself begins tat savitur varenyam; distinguish the introductory words from that source verse.

Savitr is the Vedic impelling deity. The solar worship context explains this page’s connection to the Surya introduction, while the mantra’s deity remains identified as Savitr. The Sanskrit source has devasya; the additional visarga found in some web displays is not included here.

Benefits

  • Devotees read it as a prayer for illumination of understanding and sound thought.

How to Chant

Read the words and meaning calmly. The customary worship text above does not include Vedic accent marks. Roman script is a reading aid; learn Vedic intonation, ritual method or initiation from a qualified teacher in your own tradition.

Its use in sandhya worship is familiar, but traditions differ in their rules and repetition counts. No single count is presented here as compulsory for everyone.
